Scientific Understanding on AI and Educational Implications
A comprehension of AI can help shape strategies for its educational use. Deep learning, a leading AI methodology, essentially solves nonlinear optimization problems, often settling for local optima. This implies occasional errors when solving real-world issues, suggesting its safer use in areas where errors are not dangerous. Consequently, in education, AI mistakes should be managed by educators and learners. The performance of super-language models like GPT-4 improves with size and they can handle increasingly more tokens, necessitating a heightened emphasis on AI literacy in education. However, there are still many things that current AI cannot do. The ability to distinguish between what AI can and cannot do, to be sensitive to it in real time, and to react to it in real time becomes critical. The rapid AI advancement predicts an era of Personal Digital Agents, offering both challenges and opportunities for existing educational institutions and startups.
